Hidden Valley Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park

Hidden Valley Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park

Stop 1: Hidden Valley Nature Trail

Location: Near the West Entrance, off Park Boulevard
Distance: 1-mile loop
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Joshua trees, epic boulder formations, and fascinating history

Our day begins at one of Joshua Tree’s most family-friendly hikes—the Hidden Valley Nature Trail. This one-mile loop is tucked inside a magical valley surrounded by towering boulders. Legend has it that this area was once a hideout for cattle rustlers...but even without the folklore, it’s an enchanting place to explore.

Arrive early to beat the crowds and grab a parking spot. Along the trail, you’ll find interpretive signs that highlight the desert’s unique ecosystem, as well as climbers scaling the iconic boulders. Hidden Valley is an adventurer’s playground, so take your time exploring and snapping photos. Remember to pack plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and follow Leave No Trace principles to keep this special spot beautiful. For more details on Hidden Valley see my complete blog post here.

Keys View overlooking Coachella Valley

Keys View in Joshua Tree National Park

Stop 2: Keys View

Location: 7 miles from Hidden Valley, off Keys View Road
Distance: 0.25-mile paved path
Difficulty: Easy and wheelchair accessible
Highlights: Panoramic views of Coachella Valley and beyond

Next, we’ll drive to Keys View, a stunning overlook perched at 5,185 feet. From here, you can see the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault, and even Mexico’s distant peaks on a clear day. The short, paved trail makes this an easy stop for all visitors, offering unforgettable desert vistas.

While we’re keeping this visit short, those looking to extend their time can explore nearby trails like Inspiration Peak. Pro tip: Pack layers, and hold onto your hat, as it can get breezy at this elevation. For more details on Keys View see my complete blog post here.

Cap Rock Picnic Area in Joshua Tree National Park

Stop 3: Cap Rock Nature Trail

Location: 5 miles from Keys View
Distance: 0.4-mile loop
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Cap Rock formation, boulder fields, and perfect picnic table spots

Next we’ll head to Cap Rock Nature Trail, a short and scenic loop perfect for stretching your legs. The area’s highlight is Cap Rock, a massive boulder seemingly defying gravity as it balances precariously atop another rock. As you explore, you’ll be surrounded by iconic Joshua trees and interpretive signs detailing the park’s geology.

This spot is also ideal for a mid-day picnic, so take a break and enjoy the serene desert atmosphere before continuing your adventure. For more details on Cap Rock see my complete blog post here.

Heart Rock in Joshua Tree National Park

Stop 4: Arch Rock Nature Trail & Heart Rock

Location: Off Pinto Basin Road near White Tank Campground
Distance: 1.4 miles round-trip
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Natural arch formation, slot canyon, and Heart Rock

Our next stop takes us to the Arch Rock Nature Trail, where you’ll find one of Joshua Tree’s most iconic formations. The short trail meanders through giant granite boulders, leading to a stunning natural arch. From certain angles, the arch looks like an elephant’s trunk—a fun photo opportunity!

Don’t miss the mini slot canyon nearby or another hidden gem a quarter mile away, Heart Rock. This naturally weathered 10 foot tall boulder is shaped like a heart. It’s an unmarked spot, so having a reliable map (like Gaia GPS) is essential. Heart Rock feels like a secret tucked away in the desert, often giving you the perfect moment of solitude. For more details on Arch Rock and Heart Rock see my complete blog post here.

Discovery Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park

Skull Rock in Joshua Tree National Park

Stop 5: Discovery Trail & Skull Rock

Location: Near Skull Rock on Park Boulevard
Distance: 0.7-mile loop
Difficulty: Easy
Highlights: Towering boulders, educational panels, and Skull Rock

Our final stop is the Discovery Trail, a kid-friendly loop designed in collaboration with local students. This trail is an outdoor scavenger hunt, winding through boulder formations and hidden alcoves. It’s the perfect spot for families or anyone looking to experience Joshua Tree’s playful side.

Before heading back to your car, cross the road to visit Skull Rock, one of the park’s most photographed formations. Shaped like a giant skull, this natural wonder is best enjoyed at sunrise or sunset, when the light enhances its eerie beauty. If you’re staying late, Skull Rock is also a fantastic stargazing spot—Joshua Tree’s night skies are a sight to behold. For more details on Discovery Trail and Skull Rock see my complete blog post here.

Know Before You Go

• Please remember the Leave No Trace Principles so this park’s natural beauty can be enjoyed for years to come.

• Make sure to check out the official Joshua Tree NPS website prior to your visit for the most up-to-date park, road and trail conditions.

• In addition to Joshua trees, there are a wide array of plants and cacti along these trails, including cholla cactus. Cholla barbs can be painful and difficult to remove, so make sure to stay on the designated paths to avoid accidental contact.

• Most of these trails offer minimal shade. As with any Joshua Tree hike, come prepared with sun protection and plenty of water.

• Be prepared for minimal cell service in Joshua Tree National Park and come equipped with a GPS enabled device. I highly recommend pre-downloading maps of the area for offline use on the Gaia GPS app for iPhone & Android devices. Download it today at gaiagps.com

• Be prepared for no amenities in the park, such as food, water, and gas. For recommendations on where to eat around Joshua Tree National Park, check out my comprehensive Joshua Tree 2-3 Day Itinerary & Travel Guide, which includes details on local restaurants and hotels.
