Moonstone Beach Overview: Location & What to Expect

Moonstone Beach is located in Cambria, California, a charming coastal town nestled along Highway 1, just south of San Simeon and Hearst Castle. It’s about 40 minutes north of San Luis Obispo, making it an easy day trip if you’re exploring California’s Central Coast.

This scenic stretch of shoreline is famous for its smooth, colorful stones, which have been naturally polished by ocean waves over time. While the name “Moonstone Beach” might lead you to believe you’ll find true moonstones, the stones here are actually chalcedony (cal-said-ah-knee), a type of quartz that has a soft, milky glow—often mistaken for moonstone. Alongside chalcedony, you’ll also find agates, jasper, jade, and even pieces of sea glass, making this one of the best places for beachcombing on the Central Coast. For more of my favorite beachcombing spots, see my Big Sur Jade Cove and Sand Dollar Beach blog posts.

Moonstone Beach Boardwalk

Moonstone Beach offers much more than just pretty stones. Whether you want to take a peaceful walk along the boardwalk, explore tide pools, watch for whales, or simply sit and soak in the view, there’s something here for everyone. One of the best ways to take in Moonstone Beach is by walking the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk. This 1.5-mile-long wooden path runs along the bluff, offering unobstructed ocean views, wildlife sightings, and plenty of places to sit and relax. The boardwalk is flat, well-maintained, and accessible for all visitors, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll any time of day. Morning walks tend to be the most peaceful, while sunset walks offer some of the most spectacular views you’ll find along the Central Coast.

In March and April, the bluffs along the boardwalk come alive with spring wildflowers, creating a vibrant contrast against the deep blue ocean. Keep an eye out for California poppies, coastal buckwheat, wild mustard, and purple lupines during the spring months. If you love wildlife watching, be sure to bring binoculars or a telephoto lens, as this is a prime spot to see whales (especially between December and April), dolphins playing in the surf, sea otters floating in the kelp beds, and a variety of seabirds like pelicans and cormorants. Along the southern end of the boardwalk, visitors will enjoy an estuary teeming with more wildlife where the Santa Rosa Creek empties into the Pacific Ocean.

Beachcombing at Moonstone Beach

Beachcombing at Moonstone Beach is one of the most enjoyable activities here, especially if you love searching for ocean-polished stones and natural treasures. The best time to look for stones is right after high tide, when the waves have washed fresh treasures up onto the shore. As you wander along the waterline, you’ll find beautifully smooth chalcedony, jasper, agates, jade, and the occasional piece of colorful sea glass. Although it’s tempting to pocket these little gems, I always try to follow the Leave No Trace Principles, taking only photographs and leaving the stones behind for the next explorer to enjoy.

Moonstone Beach Tidepools

Tidepooling here is also amazing, especially at the north end of the beach, where the rocky shoreline creates the perfect habitat for intertidal marine life. During low tide or negative tide, you can spot an incredible array of sea creatures, including crabs, sea snails, barnacles, sea anemones, and even the occasional small octopus. If you plan on exploring the tidepools, be sure to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes as the rocks can be slippery...and always remember to look, but don’t touch—these little creatures are delicate and should be left undisturbed in their natural habitat.

Surfing, Swimming & Fishing

The waves here can be powerful and unpredictable, making this a spot best suited for experienced surfers. The best break is at the northern end near Leffingwell Landing, where you’ll often see a few locals out in the water.

Moonstone Beach is not ideal for swimming, as the water tends to be cold year-round with strong currents. If you’re looking for a safer beach for swimming, I’d consider heading to Avila Beach or San Simeon Cove instead.

Shore fishing is allowed in areas, and anglers can catch rockfish, perch, and even halibut. If you plan on fishing, make sure to check California fishing regulations and have a valid fishing license.
