Sand Dunes & Crashing Waves

If you're looking for a spot where strong waves crash up against sand dunes as far as the eye can see, look no further than Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve

I discovered this hidden gem on the set of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End” years ago, but it originally made its mark on Hollywood over nine decades ago, appearing in Cecil B DeMille's "The Ten Commandments”.

The beach is not dog friendly, so Thumper doesn't join along on visits here. There are over 500 acres to explore, but much of the sand is roped off as protected nesting grounds for snowy plovers from March through September. So if you really want to spend hours exploring the dunes (instead of the beach), I might recommend waiting until the winter months so you have the freedom to roam all over.

The long coastline is ideal for a reflective stroll year round. The winds are often strong, which I enjoy. The Dunes are a fun stop south of Pismo Beach and north of Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Are you looking forward to Summer beach days?
